POETIC has been commissioned by Averøy Municipality to realise a multifunctional sculpture outside the town hall on Averøy. We would like to thank Project Manager Ragnhild Berthinussen for her trust, and for the opportunity to contribute to a project that brings together art, architecture, landscape and public use.

The sculpture has been developed as an organic, undulating timber form. It can be experienced as a small-scale landscape: a place to sit, climb, meet, play, rest, and see the municipality from a new perspective. The ambition is to create a public object with a clear artistic presence that also invites active physical engagement.

The form has been parametrically designed and will be constructed from almost 300 2” x 6” timber members, mounted closely side by side. Through repetition, variation and precise making, a soft and lively geometry emerges. The project explores how simple materials and rational construction can create a poetic and sensory expression.

The work will be carried out in collaboration with local and regional expertise. Daniel Mørk of Mørk Snekkerservice will be responsible for the carpentry and assembly. Groundworks will be undertaken by Kongshaug Maskin, and structural engineering is provided by Øystein Flakk at Rambøll.

For POETIC, this is an important design-build project. It allows us to work closely with the material, the craft and the site, and to develop architecture at a 1:1 scale. We believe that projects of this kind can create new forms of public space, where art and use are not separate, but work together.
